Sherin Ng Lay Hwa

Sherin is a selftaught watercolour and acrylic artist who has an undying passion for Peranakan culture and the art of Batik. Sherin has “evolved” – but certainly without losing the essence of her identity. A true Nyonya at heart, she expresses herself through her beautiful artwork. It is apparent in her attention to detail in all her artwork – the result, labour of love. No detail is without meaning its for the Peranakan and Sherin exemplified that.

Sherin’s artistic expressions are inspired through her childhood. She watched her grandmother Siew Kim, lived a Peranakan-influenced life. It is through her grandmother that Sherin would eventually become so deeply involved and in love with the art of Batik (Sarung) and the Kebaya. Moments with her grandmother and all of her influences and strong connection are all expressed in Sherin’s paintings. Her vibrant paintings speak of joy, love, beauty, the colours of harmony, a free spirit, kindness, compassion, peace, freedom, delight, romance and all other wonderful facets of Peranakan culture. Although the life of her grandmother and Sherin’s are worlds apart today, the traditional wisdom of the Peranakan culture still holds true. In her grandmother’s days, dressing up and cooking were media to hone her sense of style. Today, canvas and painting have become agents of Sherin’s passion.

Painting to Sherin is like cooking a delicious meal for loved ones, something she learned from her granny’s love for them in expressing and sharing through her granny’s delicious nyonya cooking. Every dish leaves a memorable impression and Sherin hopes to share this feeling through her paintings. It is Sherin’s way of expressing love and she hopes it will bring joy and love to the eyes of the beholder.

Sherin valued batik as one of the many things all Malaysian wear and use regardless of race in the early days, typically unique Malaysian ways. This is the kind of bonding that Sherin see with batik and people of Malaysia. She sees batik in her own styles and a freedom of expression. Colors and patterns in all impressionable shapes and forms were motifs edged into tiffins and even into nyonya shoes. Such were Sherin’s inspirations and her interpretations of the Batik blending into the Peranakan heritage and culture.

To honor the art of Batik, Sherin uses wax. Her skill in using wax is apparent as it is seamlessly blended with the other elements in her painting. Sherin uses wax as a distinctive medium in her art to also accentuate and identify with the rich heritage of our culture. She reckoned it appropriate to use wax on all of her paintings to compliment and give more meaning to what she is painting. After all, what is Batik without wax? Sherin is fascinated that the use of wax was introduced in batik making in the early days. It is nothing short of brilliance, she must say. If wax had not been used as an essential part of batik making we will never be able to enjoy all those beautiful batik from our heritage.

In year 2011, Sherin had an opportunity to display her artworks at the Kuala Lumpur International Batik 2011 showcase “Baba Nyonya Kebudayaan Peranakan” at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on Baba Peter Wee’s invitation, the President of the Peranakan Association Singapore who was very generous with advise and helped build Sherin’s foundation and artistic direction. The show was officiated by Tun Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi and the reception was very encouraging for Sherin.

And in year 2014, Sherin did her 1st Inaugural Solo Art Exhibition at her hometown in Sepaloh Art Centre in Ipoh, Perak with 34 pieces of her entire collection that took her nearly 4 years to complete. It was truly rewarding to witness such a good reception from the people of her hometown.

Sherin has so far produced a few series of paintings, which have been well received by the public and private collectors. To mention a few, “Precious Moment” a painting from the Nyonya series is now in the private collection of Baba Peter Wee, the President of the Peranakan Association Singapore. Sherin is also well known for the series of painting titled “By My Sides”, “Mother’s Love” and “Daughter’s Heritage”, a trio that is now owned by Mr Lim of Sarang Paloh Heritage Stay, Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia.

Sherin was also one of the invited participating Artist in year 2016 together with over 123 artists from 33 different countries for the Langkawi Art Biennale 2016 which was hel in the Langkawi International Convention Centre at Langkawi Island, Malaysia. During the exhibition, her painting was selected for the Yayasan Tengku Kassim. And it was presented  during the LAB2016’s Appreciation Night to Yang Teramat Mulia Dr Tunku Mansor Ibni Almarhom Tunku Kassim, royal family member of Kedah.
